Deployment: Somalia

Environmental factors posing the greatest health risk (in descending order) to forces deployed to Somalia include:
  • limited water availability,
  • water contaminated with raw sewage and possibly toxic materials,
  • high heat (intense sunlight) with humidity,
  • and frequent dust storms primarily during July through September.

Pre-deployment immunizations for all personnel include Hepatitis A, MMR, Td, influenza, typhoid, yellow fever and meningococcal vaccine. Selected personnel may require other vaccines as dictated by appropriate medical authority. There is a year-round, countrywide risk of malarial infection.
