DEPLOYMENT

President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai today reaffirmed the shared U.S. and Afghan goals to defeat al-Qaida and to establish good governance and a growing economy in Afghanistan. The two men spoke to the White House press corps after a meeting in the Oval Office this morning ... Obama said. "We are reviewing the progress of our shared strategy and objectives: a military effort to reverse the Taliban's momentum and to strengthen Afghanistan's capacity to provide for their own security; a civilian effort to promote good governance and development; and regional cooperation, including with Pakistan, because our strategy has to succeed on both sides of the border... As we pursue our shared strategy to defeat al-Qaida, I'm pleased that our two countries are   Soldiers patrol in Salah Ad Din Province, Iraq. August 3, 2006

DoD Mental Health Self-Assessment (MHSA) Program Offered to Military Families and Service Members

The Mental Health Self-Assessment (MHSA) Program is a voluntary, anonymous, self-directed mental health and alcohol screening and referral program offered to military Families and service members affected by deployments and mobilizations.

The screening is designed so that one can review his or her situation, with regard to some of the more common mental health issues. Rather than providing a diagnosis, it is designed to identify any presence of symptoms consistent with a condition or concern that would benefit from further evaluation or treatment. In addition, the screening provides guidance as to where one might seek assistance.

The MHSA is offered online, in both English and Spanish, 24/7 and through special events held at installations and reserve units. There is also an assessment for parents worried about depression in a teenage child. For a telephone version, call 877-877-3647.
