Deployment: Afghanistan

Environmental health factors posing the greatest risk (in descending order) to forces deployed to Afghanistan include:
  • water shortages,
  • contamination of water supplies with untreated sewage,
  • diurnal temperature extremes,
  • frequent dust storms (primarily June to September),
  • high altitude in the northeast region,
  • vegetables contaminated with sewage,
  • localized air pollution.

Pre-deployment immunizations for all personnel include Hepatitis A, MMR, Td and Influenza. Selected personnel may require other vaccines as dictated by appropriate medical authority. Malaria risk is variable.
